Hima Seafood Rjukan – World’s largest land-based trout RAS facility

We have generated the world’s largest land-based trout farm — a flagship turn-key RAS facility that positions Eyvi as a world leader in land-based aquaculture solutions.

In the Rjukan valley, deep between the mountains of Telemark, Norway, the Hima Seafood facility represents a new way of thinking about food production: producing healthy proteins locally through land-based aquaculture and advanced RAS technology, with a significantly reduced impact on our fragile ecosystems.

Project highlights

Client: Hima Seafood Rjukan AS

Period: 2022-2025

  • World’s largest land-based trout farm
  • Process turn-key delivery by Eyvi
  • 8,000 tonnes annual production capacity
  • Full lifecycle production: hatchery to harvest
  • 13 RAS departments
  • First eggs introduced January 2024
  • First harvest completed June 2025
  • Proven performance: premium product quality
A project in a class of its own

With an annual production capacity of 8,000 tonnes of trout and a footprint of approximately 27,000 m², the Hima Seafood Rjukan project also highlights the efficiency of land-based aquaculture, enabling high output from a relatively limited area compared to traditional protein production.

Eyvi’s A-Z approach

From the very beginning, Hima Seafood Rjukan has been delivered according to Eyvi’s A–Z approach, taking full ownership from early concept and design, through planning and execution, and into a facility ready for production.

This meant developing complete, integrated solutions, where civil works, process design, water treatment and production flow were engineered to function as one. Every element was designed with the full lifecycle of the fish in mind, ensuring consistency from the earliest stages of planning to final handover.

From first eggs to full-scale production

When the first eggs arrived in January 2024, the project entered a new and defining phase. From that moment, progress was no longer driven solely by construction milestones, but by the development of a living production cycle — where the growth of the fish dictated the pace and sequencing of the work.

In practice, this meant the facility was built and brought into operation step by step, while production was already underway. Construction, commissioning and operations ran in parallel, requiring close coordination and continuous alignment across disciplines.

The facility integrates the full production lifecycle, from hatchery and smolt to grow-out and finally, pre-processing. Delivering this required ensuring that each department was completed, tested and operational at exactly the right time — ready to receive fish as they progressed through the system.

First harvest

In June 2025, the project reached a major milestone with the harvest of the first production batch, marking the transition from completed delivery to proven performance.

At this stage, the facility demonstrated stable production conditions, with harvest weights of 3.5–5 kg (HOG) and premium product quality. This proof of concept confirms that the facility not only meets design specifications, but performs as intended under real production conditions.

A facility built for sustainability and fish welfare

The facility is based on recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) technology, enabling advanced water treatment and full control over water quality and fish welfare. Eyvi’s RAS solutions are designed to reuse up to 99.7% of the water, supporting stable conditions for fish welfare and fish health, while significantly reducing water consumption and environmental impact.

The result is a facility built for sustainable production, where technology, biology and environmental responsibility are closely connected. It combines efficient water usage, stable and predictable conditions for the fish, and integrated waste management systems that ensure responsible handling of residuals while unlocking potential value from by-products such as sludge and nutrients.

In Eyvi’s terms, this is what it means to generate more with less.

Transforming the future of global food production

Hima Seafood Rjukan has been a demanding and rewarding journey, defined by collaboration, precision and continuous improvement. It is a project we are immensely proud of. It represents a new benchmark for land-based aquaculture, and a strong foundation for Eyvi’s future deliveries.

This is how we transform the future of global food production.
