Arctic Smolt –
Turn-key RAS facility in Iceland

A land-based RAS facility for Atlantic salmon smolt, delivered between existing structures and designed for precision, control and reliable fish production, located in Tálknafjörður, Iceland.

A compact project with high technical ambition

Arctic Smolt is a land-based aquaculture facility in Iceland, designed for Atlantic salmon smolt and post-smolt production up to approximately 400 grams.

The RAS system was built within and between existing buildings, requiring careful planning, adaptation and integration across all disciplines.

Eyvi delivered the project as a turn-key RAS facility, including engineering, system design and installation of key process systems.

At the core of the facility are two independent RAS departments, designed to ensure stable and controlled conditions for the fish. The system combines mechanical filtration, biological treatment (MBBR), degassing and oxygenation to deliver full control over water quality and fish welfare.

Execution under challenging conditions

 

The contract was signed in August 2021, with construction starting the following October, and planned completion set to Q1 2023.

From the start, the project was shaped by demanding conditions. Ground instability required major adjustments during early construction, while the Icelandic climate with harsh wind, snow and low temperatures, added complexity throughout execution.

Despite this, progress was made across civil works, structural construction and process installation.

A critical incident and project stop

In February 2023, the project reached a critical turning point when a major fire broke out at the building site. The damage from the incident was significant, and the project was put on hold.
